see i think the difference here is that in a classroom context in a lot of places disagreeing with the teacher’s interpretation or thinking it’s over-analysis can get you in Trouble or take a sizable chunk out of your grade

but. yeah.

adding onto this, in my English class if you had your own analysis idea, regardless of whether it was a perfectly good interpretation you were basically just told to stick to the analysis set out in the revision guides. so I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the attitude is frustration at that kind of thing, because it’s one thing to be told to analyse and another to be told to memorise the interpretations listed in the curriculum! and I think there are probably a lot of cases where people lash out from the frustration caused by that kind of restriction, but don’t necessarily do a wonderful job of articulating the basic problem, if they’re even entirely aware of it in the first place.
